Yevhen Konovalets

Ukrainian military and political organizer who commanded the Sich Riflemen and became the first leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. He was assassinated by a Soviet agent in Rotterdam in 1938.

Biography

Yevhen Konovalets was born near Lviv in 1891 and studied law before serving in the Austro-Hungarian army. After captivity and the upheavals of 1917, he helped organise the Sich Riflemen in Kyiv. They became an important military formation of the Ukrainian People's Republic and participated in the overthrow of the Hetmanate.

Following defeat, Konovalets developed the Ukrainian Military Organization in exile. Its underground networks opposed Polish rule in Galicia through intelligence work and sabotage. In 1929 he became the first leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, bringing together several nationalist organisations and maintaining links between the émigré leadership and activists in Ukraine.

In May 1938 he was assassinated in Rotterdam by Soviet agent Pavel Sudoplatov, who delivered a concealed bomb. His death intensified leadership tensions that later produced the split between the Melnyk and Bandera factions of the OUN.
