Biography

Viacheslav Chornovil was a journalist and political leader born in 1937. His reporting on the persecution of Ukrainian intellectuals developed into documentary criticism of Soviet repression. Material published abroad as The Chornovil Papers presented court proceedings, biographies, and procedural abuses to an international readership.

He edited the underground journal Ukrainian Herald and endured repeated imprisonment and internal exile. His work combined the preservation of evidence with advocacy for civil rights and Ukrainian cultural freedom.

During perestroika he moved into public politics, became head of the Lviv regional council in 1990, and helped lead the People's Movement of Ukraine, known as Rukh. He finished second in the 1991 presidential election and remained a prominent parliamentary advocate of independence and democratic reform. Chornovil died in a road collision near Kyiv in March 1999. Questions about the circumstances and the investigation have remained part of the public discussion of his death.
