Veli İbraimov

Crimean Tatar Soviet politician who chaired the Central Executive Committee of the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in the 1920s. He was executed in 1928 and later rehabilitated.

Biography

Veli İbraimov was a Crimean Tatar Soviet politician who emerged from the workers' movement and joined the Bolsheviks. From 1924 he chaired the Central Executive Committee of the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, becoming a leading figure in the republic's administration.

He promoted Crimean Tatar participation in government, native-language education, and publishing during the policy of indigenisation. Land distribution and settlement were especially contentious parts of his work. He advocated the interests of Crimean Tatar communities in disputes over land and opposed some centrally directed settlement plans.

İbraimov was arrested in January 1928 and executed in May on charges including involvement in a murder. His removal was followed by repression against Crimean Tatar officials and attacks on policies associated with him. He was formally rehabilitated in 1990. His career reflects both the opportunities and the limits of early Soviet support for national institutions.
