Biography
Osman Akçokraklı was a scholar from Bahçesaray whose work crossed history, archaeology, geography, calligraphy, and teaching. The İleri thesis gives his birth year as 1878 and connects his surname with the village of Akçokrak. He belonged to the generation that developed Crimean Tatar scholarly institutions in the 1920s.
His research documented inscriptions on mosques, fountains, and gravestones, as well as the Khan's Palace and Crimean tamga marks. He taught at the Crimean Pedagogical Institute, took part in ethnographic expeditions, and contributed to the Crimean Tatar press, including İleri. Recording material culture was especially important because many of the monuments and inscriptions he studied were later damaged or lost.
Akçokraklı was executed during the Stalinist purges in 1938. His surviving publications preserve evidence of Crimea's cultural history and of the scholarly community dismantled by repression.
