Olena Teliha

Ukrainian poet and cultural organizer associated with the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. In German-occupied Kyiv she led a writers' organization and edited the literary supplement Litavry. The Gestapo arrested her, and she was executed in 1942.

Biography

Olena Teliha was born in 1906 and spent her childhood in St. Petersburg and Kyiv before emigrating to Czechoslovakia. She trained as a teacher and became part of the Ukrainian émigré literary community associated with Prague. Her compact body of poetry explored courage, personal responsibility, and the relationship between conviction and action.

She joined the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists and returned to Kyiv in autumn 1941 with groups associated with its Melnyk faction. Under German occupation she led a writers' organisation and edited the literary supplement Litavry, attempting to sustain Ukrainian cultural work in increasingly dangerous conditions.

German authorities closed the publication and arrested members of the Ukrainian cultural and nationalist networks. Teliha refused to leave Kyiv despite warnings. She and her husband were arrested and killed in February 1942. Her poetry and death made her a lasting figure in the memory of Ukrainian literary life under occupation.
