Olena Kulchytska

Ukrainian painter, printmaker, illustrator, and teacher. Her work brought folk-art traditions into modern design and documented the clothing and everyday life of western Ukraine.

Biography

Olena Kulchytska was born in Berezhany in 1877 and trained at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna. Returning to Galicia, she developed a career in painting, printmaking, book illustration, textiles, and applied design, alongside many years of teaching in Peremyshl and Lviv.

Her work brought Ukrainian folk traditions into modern artistic practice. She studied the construction, patterns, and colours of everyday objects, using them as a basis for new designs. Woodcuts, etchings, watercolours, and illustrations formed parts of a broad artistic output.

Kulchytska also documented regional clothing, domestic buildings, churches, and everyday life in western Ukraine. Her drawings and watercolours preserve details of Hutsul, Boiko, Lemko, and Pokuttia communities before war and displacement transformed them. She died in 1967. Her artistic and ethnographic collections remain closely associated with Lviv, where a museum commemorates her work.
