Oleh Olzhych
Ukrainian poet, archaeologist, and political organizer, born Oleh Kandyba. He held leadership roles in the Melnyk faction of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists and organized underground activity during the German occupation. He died under Nazi torture at Sachsenhausen in 1944.

Biography
Oleh Olzhych was the literary name of Oleh Kandyba, born in Zhytomyr in 1907 into a poet's family. He developed parallel careers in archaeology and literature. After earning a doctorate in Prague, he researched prehistoric cultures, published scholarly work, and participated in international academic networks.
His poetry collections Rin and Vezhi drew on historical and archaeological imagery. They explored endurance, action, and the rise and disappearance of civilisations, connecting his literary imagination with his scholarly interests.
Olzhych also held senior responsibilities in the Melnyk faction of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. During the war he organised underground activity in occupied Ukraine and continued after German arrests had disrupted its networks. The Gestapo arrested him in Lviv in 1944 and sent him to Sachsenhausen, where he died under torture that June. His life brought together scholarship, poetry, and political commitment under conditions of exile and occupation.
