Mykola Mikhnovsky

Ukrainian lawyer and nationalist political organizer whose 1900 pamphlet Independent Ukraine argued for sovereign statehood. He helped establish the Ukrainian People's Party and promoted the formation of a Ukrainian national army during the revolution of 1917.

Biography

Mykola Mikhnovsky was a lawyer and nationalist political organiser born in 1873. His 1900 pamphlet Samostiina Ukraina argued for a sovereign Ukrainian state at a time when many activists favoured autonomy or federation. The text became an influential expression of the independence position.

He worked through the Brotherhood of Taras and the Ukrainian People's Party, combining legal practice with political organising. His uncompromising nationalism brought both followers and disagreements within the wider Ukrainian movement.

In 1917 Mikhnovsky advocated the creation of a national army and helped organise Ukrainian military initiatives, including the movement associated with the Polubotok Regiment. He clashed with the Central Rada's leadership and lost political influence. Returning to Kyiv under Soviet rule, he died in 1924 in circumstances recorded as suicide but subsequently disputed. His legacy is closely tied to the early demand for full independence and debates about the relationship between statehood, nationalism, and military power.
