Igor Sikorsky

Kyiv-born aviation engineer who developed early multiengine aircraft and later founded Sikorsky Aircraft in the United States. His helicopter designs helped establish the modern helicopter industry.

Biography

Igor Sikorsky was born in Kyiv in 1889 and began experimenting with aircraft while still a young man. Early attempts at helicopters gave way to fixed-wing designs. In 1913 he developed the large four-engine aircraft Russky Vityaz and Ilya Muromets, helping demonstrate the possibilities of multi-engine aviation.

After the revolution he emigrated to the United States in 1919. He founded an aircraft company in 1923 with support from fellow émigrés. Its flying boats, including the S-38 and S-42, contributed to the expansion of long-distance commercial air routes in the 1930s.

Sikorsky returned to helicopter development with the VS-300, first flown in 1939. Its main-rotor and tail-rotor arrangement became a widely used configuration. The R-4 that followed brought helicopters into series production and operational service. He died in 1972, leaving a legacy spanning early large aeroplanes, commercial flying boats, and practical helicopters.
