Hacı I Giray
Founder of the Crimean Khanate and the Giray dynasty in the fifteenth century. He established an independent Crimean state as the Golden Horde fragmented.

Biography
Hacı I Giray founded the Crimean Khanate during the fragmentation of the Golden Horde in the fifteenth century. His rise depended on both local support and connections with the rulers of Lithuania, where he spent periods of exile.
After repeated contests for power, he established a durable position in Crimea in the 1440s. Coinage in his name and diplomatic relations with neighbouring powers expressed the khanate's independent political identity. His rule laid the foundations of the Giray dynasty, which remained associated with Crimean government for more than three centuries.
Hacı Giray died in 1466. The later development of Bahçesaray as the capital and the establishment of Ottoman suzerainty belonged to his successors. Distinguishing those later developments helps explain the independent state he founded and its place among the successor states of the Golden Horde.
