Georgiy Gongadze

Georgian-born Ukrainian journalist who co-founded Ukrainska Pravda. His abduction and murder in 2000 prompted a major political scandal and made his case central to debates about press freedom in Ukraine.

Biography

Georgiy Gongadze was born in Tbilisi in 1969 and worked in documentary film, television, and radio before establishing himself as a journalist in Kyiv. In April 2000 he co-founded the online newspaper Ukrainska Pravda with Olena Prytula, creating an outlet for reporting on political power and corruption.

After reporting surveillance and harassment, he disappeared on 16 September 2000. His body was found later that year. His murder, and the subsequent controversy over recordings from President Leonid Kuchma's office, triggered the Cassette Scandal and the Ukraine without Kuchma protests.

Interior ministry officers were convicted of involvement in the killing, followed by former police general Oleksiy Pukach in 2013. Those convictions did not settle the wider question of who ordered the crime. Gongadze's work and death became central to debates over press freedom, political accountability, and violence against journalists in Ukraine.
